The Speaker
The speaker is not identified, but the poem is told through an omniscient voice — someone who is able to see flowers in fields as well as stars in the cosmos. Alongside the biblical allusions throughout the poem, the reader may understand this to be a god-like figure, or an overarching force of the universe. The speaker is largely impersonal; however, there is a clear sense that they feel a protectiveness for the people of the world. They do not impose any sort of societal judgement on them, believing that once they leave the earthly plane behind, they will all be brought together in harmony and unity. The speaker is detached from the social stigmas to which these people have been exposed, but understands their place in the world.
