Summary
Chapter 11 returns to December, 2016 for James’s first appearance in court, six weeks after his arrest. Sitting up in the public gallery looking down at James in the dock behind bullet proof glass, Sophie can hardly believe where she is and that events have come to this. Chris Clarke thought it important for Sophie be present in order to make a show of support for James in front of the throngs of reporters, but the pretense of their public facade is too draining for her and she knows she will not be able to attend every day of the trial. Sophie thinks of how her philandering father left her mother when her mother was several years older than Sophie now, but Sophie must reluctantly admit to herself how much she needs James. She never asks him if he loved Olivia, pretending the question...
