Hazel Sinnett
Hazel Sinnett is the protagonist of the story. She is a wealthy, aristocratic teenage girl who lives with her mother, her younger brother, and the family’s servants. Her father is away serving in the military. She has known since she was quite young that she was expected to marry her cousin, Bernard Almont. She accepts this fate as she believes it is how she must live, but she is not particularly attracted to it, and she definitely is not attracted to the life she will lead as a viscountess.
Hazel's primary interest is science and the human body, and she wishes to be a surgeon. In order to pursue this goal, she dresses up in the clothes of her deceased brother and enrolls in an anatomy class to prepare her to take the Royal Physician’s Examination.
