Summary
As Chapter 10 opens, Lady Sinnett is hastily preparing to take the family to Bath to protect Percy from the Roman Fever. The day before they are to depart, Hazel feigns sickness. She knows that if her mother believes she is sick, she will let her stay home so as not to expose Percy to her germs. Hazel screams through the door that she has a fever, blurred vision, and a green tongue. She has heated the bedpan to warm the sheets and has water to pat against her face to make her appear sick if her mother comes in to check on her, but “she might have known that Lady Sinnett would be too frightened to get closer than the landing” (94).
