Summary

As Chapter 5 begins, Hazel is convinced that she can get into the lecture without Bernard. She has come up with a plan. She will leave the castle on horseback and “pull the collar of her father’s winter jacket as high over her neck as it would go, and keep her head down” (45). She believes that she will be able to slip in undetected and then sneak out and be home in time for supper. She is sure her mom will be too preoccupied to notice.
