Summary
In Chapter 13, Mireille spent the night under her bed. She promised herself that she could survive her experience. In the morning, when the Commander came and gave her a newspaper to hold in front of herself, she managed to look him in the eye. Even though the Commander ordered her to call her father, Mireille asked instead to talk to Michael. She begged him to come and get her. The Commander was angry again with Mireille for not playing the game correctly. When the negotiator called back, the Commander pressed one of Mireille’s bruises. She could not help but scream. Her father yelled to her that he loved her, but Mireille believed he was lying. After the Commander left, Mireille comforted herself by looking at her engagement ring.
Mireille remembered that when they were engaged, Michael had been gone to Germany...
