Point of View
This novel is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator. Consider this quote: “Sophie followed her up the stairs, wondering why, if she were merely about to begin a new job, she felt as if she were entering a new family” (200-201). The quote focuses on Sophie and her thoughts, but Sophie is called by her name. She would have referred to herself as “I” if it had been written in the first-person. Sophie and Benedict are the main characters of focus for the narrator. He records their thoughts, actions, and emotions as they interact with each other and other characters.
