Summary
In Chapter 22, in jail, Sophie was cold, hungry, and thirsty. To make matters worse, Araminta had been allowed to visit Sophie. She told Sophie she was accusing her of stealing not only the shoe clips but also her wedding ring. Araminta reminded Sophie it was her word against Sophie’s. Sophie asked Araminta why she hated her so much. Araminta said it was because the earl had loved Sophie, a statement that surprised Sophie.
Sophie heard Benedict demanding that someone let them pass. There was the sound of someone being hit and then running feet. Benedict shocked Araminta by kissing Sophie. He asked what the charges were against Sophie. Araminta claimed Sophie had stolen from her, but Violet argued that was unlikely. Violet also informed Araminta that she had never liked her.
