“Introduction to Poetry” takes place in an academic environment and suggests a course devoted to understanding poetry’s foundations. While the course may be applied to any age group, there is a tension in the needs of the students that suggests an older group who is working towards academic achievement. By nature, a classroom is a limiting vehicle through which to explore any art form, and it is clear that the teacher in the poem is constrained by these literal and figurative walls. Conversely, the students have come to expect something specific from this particular setting, and to believe that it in turn expects something from them.
