Summary

The action is continuous.

After Goole leaves, Sheila and Mrs. Birling try to collect themselves, but Birling says that of all of them, Eric is the one most to blame, accusing him of creating a public scandal and causing him to lose his knighthood. Eric laughs, saying a knighthood does not matter. Birling tells him that things are going to change for him – he is going to work in the business for free, and there will be no more going out. Mrs. Birling says that she is ashamed of Eric, and he says that he is ashamed of them both. As Birling tries to defend himself and his wife, Sheila agrees with Eric, acknowledging her own responsibility for what happened to Eva / Daisy and pointing out that neither of her parents seem to think that not much has happened at all.
