Summary

The action is continuous, picking up at the moment that ended Act One – that is, with Goole standing in a doorway looking in at Sheila and Gerald.

After a moment, Goole comes into the room. Gerald tries to get Sheila to leave, but she insists upon staying. Goole comments on how Gerald seems to want to protect her, and perhaps young women in general, from “unpleasant things,” but then comments that they all know “one young woman who wasn’t [protected]” (28). Sheila suggests it might be better if she stays, and Gerald accuses her of wanting to see someone else go through the same painful thing as she did. They argue, but Google interrupts them, suggesting that while Sheila is to some degree responsible, she perhaps wants to stay so she can learn that she is not alone in that responsibility...
