Summary

Mutti told the man that her son needed a doctor. A woman came to the door and ushered the family into the home. The old man, Hans, took Lizzie and Marlene around the house to a barn where Marlene could stay. The narrator noticed that Hans was grumbling but did not realize why until they returned to the house and she realized that every available space was occupied by refugees.
