Point of View

This novel is told from the point of view of two-first person narrators, Jess and Shields. This dual point of view works well for the novel since it allows both Jess and Shields to share their personal thoughts and emotions about what is happening in the novel. It is important to know what is happening in both Jess and Shields mind since there is so little action in the novel. The majority of the action comes through the mental parrying between Shields and Jess.

Had the authors decided to have either Jess or Shields alone narrate the novel they would not have been able to tell the whole story. Jess would have been able to tell the story only from her point of view. There would have been no insight into Shields’ misplaced ideas about love or the way in which she went about manipulating...
