Summary

In Part Three: Generosity, narrative shifts to Andre arriving at Big Roy’s house to pick up Roy. Big Roy explained that his son had already left for Atlanta. Big Roy then fixed Andre some salmon croquettes and thanked Andre for participating in his wife’s funeral. Then he told Andre to stay away from Roy and Celestial and refused to allow Andre to use the home phone. There is no cell service. According to Andre, Big Roy added: “Listen, I’m doing for Roy what your own father would do for you” (223).

Celestial takes over the narrative. She remembers her father telling her that marriage had taught him his limitations; Celestial laughed and declared, “Not my marriage. It’s going to be different” (225). She is in the babydoll store when a customer comes in...
