Point of View

The story is written in third person from Matthias's perspective. The point of view is limited to Matthias's perspective which is appropriate to the story and subject. The limitation is also necessary in order to maintain the suspense. The most important example of this is seen in Matthias's belief that Percy and Alia are dead following Tiddy's story of burning everything in the region. Matthias lives with his grief - which is assumed to be grief over Tiddy's death - until he escapes the Population Police headquarters. Another example is seen when Matthias escapes the Population Police headquarters and finds Mike waiting for him. Matthias remains uneasy and that is relayed to the reader. The reader is unaware of Mike's true intentions at that point, keeping the suspense going. The fact that the story is in third person is slightly more limited than typical. For example...
