The novel’s primary setting is Sydney, Australia. Sydney is Australia’s most populous city. It is located on Australia’s southeastern coast, and it is the capital of the Australian state of new South Wales. After fleeing from Sri Lanka, Danny immigrates to Sydney on a student visa. However, when the Australian government refuses to recognize him as a refugee, Danny’s visa lapses, and he becomes an illegal immigrant. Danny lives in Sydney and makes a living by cleaning people’s homes. Danny lives in constant fear of being arrested and deported back to Sri Lanka, where his life could be in danger. During the novel’s central storyline, Danny has been living in Sydney for four years. When Danny reports Radha to the police for killing Prakash, the police learn of Danny’s illegal status and arrest him.
