Summary
In Chapter 19, Alamaya realizes that Tasan was the one who stole the letter of commission written by Haile Selassie. Alamaya meets with Tasan to confront him about his unjust manipulation of forces in Harlem attempting to help Ethiopia. Tasan responds that the cause is a lost one and that Ethiopia has already effectively been sacrificed to Italy by England, France, and the League of Nations. Seraphine overhears this conversation, and she confronts Tasan. Seraphine vows to expose Tasan’s various forms of subterfuge. Alamaya realizes that Tasan had temporarily converted Seraphine to his cause by orchestrating the marriage between her and Nordling. Alamaya storms off in a rage.
