Ship
The novel opens on a large passenger ship that has just arrived in the harbor of New York City. Karl is one of the passengers. On this ship, while he looks for his trunk, he meets an engine stoker who works on the ship. Karl tries to help the stoker voice workplace grievances to the ship’s management, but management dismisses them. The ship is also where Karl first encounters his uncle.
New York City
Uncle Jacob lives in New York City. He is a successful politician and business entrepreneur. He lives in a large, opulent apartment, where he lets Karl live as well. Jacob arranges various lessons for Karl, such as English lessons and horseback-riding lessons. The last time Karl sees Jacob is after Karl accepts an invitation to visit Mr. Pollunder, a friend/associate of Jacob’s. Jacob becomes inexplicably furious and disowns Karl.
