Summary
Chapter 4 is entitled “The Road to Rameses.” Without any other options, Karl leaves Pollunder’s house on foot. He eventually arrives at a small inn. His only possessions are his clothes, the contents of his trunk, and a little money. Karl pays to stay at the inn. In a bedroom, he examines the contents of his trunk and finds that nothing is missing. He takes out a photograph of his parents and looks at it briefly before returning it to the trunk. Karl makes the acquaintance of two traveling workers: an Irishman named Robinson and a Frenchman named Delamarche. They say they are going to the town of Rameses, New York, where a person can find well-paying manual labor jobs. They agree to let Karl travel with them.
