Summary
In Chapter 3, “A Country House Near New York,” Pollunder and Karl travel by car to Pollunder’s upstate country house. Karl is impressed by the size of the house. Inside, he meets Pollunder’s daughter, Clara. Karl finds Clara very attractive. Clara says that Mr. Green—a friend and associate of Jacob and Pollunder—has arrived. Pollunder appears irritated, as Green did not previously state his intention to visit. They meet with Green, who asks for an apology and says that he has come on urgent business. However, when pressed, Green says that he cannot yet tell them what the business is. Karl becomes increasingly uneasy in the house, and he continues to think about Jacob’s seemingly agitated state when Karl left with Pollunder.
