Summary
Having successfully crossed the river, the Chestnuts wait for the bus to arrive. The bus driver is accompanied by an armed rebel. Martina tells them that the commander allowed them to ride to Patience, but the driver does not believe her. He demands a fee and begins to leave without them, Martina agrees to his price, giving him all the money she owns. They sit near an old man, the only other passenger. He tells Martina about his hometown of Blind River. Martina asks him if he knows anything about Camp Patience, but he does not pay her much attention and instead rambles on about memories of Blind River. The bus drives through a barren landscape and reaches the Louisiana-Mississippi border, where it is inspected.
