Point of View

The point of view of America Royals is third-person, primarily through the lens of the young female characters. McGee explores the ascent into adulthood through various female characters: Beatrice, Samantha, Daphne, and Nina. The various perspectives capture the collective struggles of young females navigating relationships, but also serve to delineate between royalty and the public. McGee utilizes contrast as Beatrice’s allegiance to the crown pervades her narrative, while Sam’s feelings of marginalization course through her narrative. Similarly, Daphne’s continuous pursuit to become a royal sharply contrasts Nina’s desire to eschew the complications that ensue as a result of being royalty. Each character’s perspective is supplemented with interior monologue allowing for an understanding of that character’s emotional journey.
