Summary
This section describes Beatrice and Teddy's engagement party. Daphne makes a grand entrance, but quickly realizes her plan to foil Nina's entrance has failed. Nina feels out of her element, yet is initially pleased with her decision to accompany Jeff as she loves him. Beatrice is understandably overwhelmed with the ceremonial greetings and gravity of the event, and asks for a break in the proceedings. Teddy supports her in her request despite the break from formality, and Beatrice seeks out Connor. Determined to keep Connor in her life, Beatrice declares her love for him and informs him she is calling off the wedding. Although she is unsure of the ramifications of such an act, she decides to tell her father she cannot marry Teddy.
Despite Nina's initial ebullient feelings, she is soon subjected to mean-spirited gossip and again feels a sense of doubt...
