Summary
Chapter Nine describes the challenges of lying in wait, looking for opportunities to escape Mexico. Meredith has acquiesced to the plan to smuggle Lydia and Luca to Mexico City on the missionary bus. Tension increases as the busses face a road block on the way to the city. Teenage boys with guns interrogate Carlos and specifically ask who Lydia is, to which he replies that she is a counselor, seated in the back of the bus as a student was ill. Carlos hands him some money and blesses him, presumably for authenticity.
Chapter Ten celebrates Lydia and Luca’s safe arrival to Mexico City where Lydia hopes to book a flight as far north as possible without drawing the attention of cartels. She requests the ticket agent find a direct same-day flight; Tijuana is the only option. However, Lydia’s plans are thwarted...
