Summary

America Fantastica begins by explaining that a new disease of the mind—mythomania, or compulsive lying—has begun to sweep across America. As it does so, a man named Boyd Halverson, a disgraced journalist who now invents clickbait for an alt-right podcast, decides to rob a bank in the small town of Fulda, California. The bank teller, Angie Bing, somewhat consensually allows Boyd to kidnap her rather than attempting to put up a fight. Boyd brings Angie and the eighty thousand dollars he has stolen to Santa Rosalía, México, where Angie, who is very talkative, begins probing Boyd about his reasons for committing the robbery. Although Boyd declines to give a full explanation, it becomes clear that he intends to track down his former father-in-law, a man named Jim Dooney.
