Summary
Chapter 41 begins with Amal venturing to the empty servants’ verandah after helping Hamid prepare an extravagant last-minute lunch for Khan Sahib. From the verandah, Amal hears two distinctly male voices drifting over the bushes. Amal identifies the voices as those of Khan and Jawad Sahib. She hears Jawad tell Khan that he ordered his men to kill the missing man because he threatened Jawad after failing to repay a debt. Jawad assures Khan that his men dispose of bodies meticulously, but Khan still requests that Jawad’s men move the body further away from their estate after the investigation dies down. Amal cannot believe that Jawad and Khan Sahib are murderers. She fears for Fozia Auntie and her family because Jawad’s men recently threatened them.
