Point of View

The novel is narrated in the first-person, always from the perspective of Maddie, a young girl who lives with her stepparents and their new spouses and three younger half-brothers. Maddie is a frequent complainer about her alternative family situation because she often feels like she does not belong with either set of stepparents as well as passed over by her parents in favor of the younger brothers.

Maddie has a distinctive inner voice throughout the narrative, and she is deeply reflective and introspective and understands the areas where she could grow and improve herself rather than blaming all her problems on the relationship she has with her parents and extended family. As the novel progress, Maddie grows in maturity and begins to understand that she is not the only one who struggled with the changes within their family.
