Book 2, Nicholas: Chapters 5-10 Summary
Chapter 5. Nicholas's grandfather, Henry Underwood Cobleigh, is born the son of a tavern owner in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Henry's father is unable to care for him after the death of his wife, so Henry grows up in an orphanage where he is greatly loved by the nuns. Despite hopes that Henry will become a priest, he leaves the orphanage and puts himself through college and law school. After beginning his legal practice, Henry marries the daughter of Reverend Spenser Howell, a man with a great reputation, but little wealth. This gives Henry the respect and social standing he craves. Henry then takes a job with T.L.
