Chapters 11-12 Summary
Ian and his friend, Jake, arrive at Ian's family home in Scotland to discover that the caretaker has forgotten to send up a couple of women from the village to cook and clean for them. While discussing this problem, Ian and Jake are interrupted by the arrival of Elizabeth and Lucinda Throckmorton-Jones. Ian immediately insists that they leave, unaware that their carriage broke down and they have no transportation back to the local village for a week. Elizabeth shows Ian the letter inviting her there, but he refuses to look at it. Instead, Ian accuses Elizabeth of having set him up to be in the greenhouse that fateful weekend by sending him a note. Ian even makes fun of Elizabeth's handwriting.
