Summary
Chapter 7 opens with more psychiatric notes. The doctor notes that Mary slept for hours when she was first arrested, and that if she were taking the prescribed dosage of medication, “she would not have had the strength to carry out the crime” (170). Mary arrives at the SAT class and discovers her math grade is improving. Mary notes that Ms. Claire is from the West Indies, and remembers that Dawn called them “coconut heads.” Ms. Claire gives Mary harder vocabulary words and instructs her to read the newspaper daily, making a note of new words. Ms. Claire notices that Mary is not dressed warmly and gives her a scarf. Back at the group home, Mary is helping unload groceries when Kelly returns from her stay in the hospital.
