Structure
The novel is organized into three parts. The first third of the novel focuses on Chung’s childhood in her parents’ home – during this period of her life, Chung experiences racial discrimination and is sheltered from any communication with her birth parents. The second third of the novel is focused on Chung’s pregnancy, her search for her birth parents, and the development of her relationship with Cindy. The final third of the novel is dedicated to Chung’s maturation and expanding perspective as she builds a relationship with her birth father and begins to better understand and embrace the circumstances leading up to her adoption.
