Summary

In Chapter 17, narrated by Nina, Nina received a pocket dial phone call from Kirk. She heard Kirk talking and a woman laughing but could not make out what was being said. When the phone got close enough for Nina to hear words she heard the woman’s voice refer to someone as “honey” (214) while Kirk’s said: “oh, shit” (214) before the phone disconnected. She waited a few minutes to see if Kirk would call back. When he did not she called him but the call went to voicemail. She sent a text but did not get an answer. When Kirk finally called he claimed he had been with an old friend and his fiancée. Nina tested him by telling him that she loved him. He failed the test by responding: “You, too” (217).
