Summary
In Chapter 8, Kyle gets dressed and shaves to go to the cemetery. Sam's words struck home, that he “can't let her think I would forget her” (64). Kyle has begun to attend physical therapy, answers Sam's texts, and is no longer “freaking out” when he sees Kim. He panics but refuses to give in to it. He feels sure he can get himself together because it is a long walk to the cemetery, but “today it feels like a block” (65). He experiences a rush of pain in his head when he sees a grave marker bearing only the word “goodbye.” He is carrying a bouquet of irises and places one flower on that headstone.
