Summary
In Chapter 20, Alex continues walking around New Orleans. On the sidewalk, she sees a man hit a woman. To Alex’s dismay, none of the onlookers intervene. Alex tries to intervene, but the man and woman strike each other and ignore Alex. The woman soon leaves, and the man leaves in a different direction. Alex then phones Gary. Alex asks where Gary is, and she informs him that the doctors believe Victor will likely die soon. Gary says that he is still in Los Angeles and that he does not plan on coming to New Orleans. Gary states that he does not believe that he owes anything to Victor. Gary recalls some specific times when Victor physically attacked him and other family members. Gary recalls other flaws and misdeeds of Victor’s and says that he does not think it will do any good...
