Summary
Upon arriving home in India, many of Sneha’s family members and neighbors begin treating her as a “madama” and treating her as though she considers herself above them for living in America. This causes Sneha a great deal of pain, particularly when she realizes that her father has become jaded and resentful about the unfortunate turn his life in America took following his involvement in visa fraud. To make matters worse, Sneha’s mother becomes increasingly insistent that Sneha attend the funeral service for her uncle, Monchayan, an invitation that Sneha does her best to refuse. When her mother begins pressuring her to go and lets slip that she is hoping to marry Sneha off to the son of one of her friends, Sneha snaps and informs her mother that Monchayan sexually abused her when she was a child.
