Summary

Cole drives straight to the old house to see Franny first thing in the morning. He offers to fix the overhang on the porch and checks the fire burning in the wood stove. Cole tells Franny about his brother Wade, who served in Iraq and is now suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. They briefly discuss their pasts and Catherine's case, but Cole "doesn't tell her what a creep her father was" (438).

They take a walk through the property and Cole tells her the land "was all ours" (438) at one point. They look through a scrapbook Cole found from his childhood, showing pictures of him and Eugene, his grandmother, and his brothers. It is revealed Eddy lives in Los Angeles and is a very successful studio musician. Cole says he never got over his first love.
