Summary
In Chapter 24, “Casimira Recalls the Last Conversation,” the author revisits his conversation with Casimira in Jalisco, 2015. She has, as the author writes, “arrived at the point in her story where there was nothing left to share. Nothing but the unavoidable moment” (125). Luis calls Casimira to tell her that he has been picked up by La Migra and is being sent home. He promises to return home with a mariachi band in tow.
In Chapter 25, “January 28, 1948,” the narrative shifts to the Immigration Detention Center in San Francisco, California. An officer wakes up the group of immigrants to be detained at 6 a.m. Guadalupe is both excited and nervous to fly. At least some of the passengers had willingly agreed to be deported via airplane, but all are nervous.
