Sarah Jacqueline Crow
Sarah, or Sarah Jac, as most of the characters call her, is a young woman who is living in a desolate world with few options available. She is a skilled farm laborer and works well with horses. Sarah has faced tragedy and brutality in her short life, and she has tried to make herself into a hard-hearted person in order to deal with the hardships she knows lie ahead. While she is in love with James Holt, they introduce themselves as cousins. Sarah insists that he pretend to like some other girl in each camp they visit to keep people from thinking that they are in love.
