Summary

In "Returns," Daniel's "ears ring" (144). He cannot tell what happened. Then he hears Jess's voice telling everyone to put their guns down. She fired a warning shot to keep them from hurting each other. When she tells Brandon's dad that Daniel and Desmond are "friends of Aubrey's," he backs down (145). They greet Jess and make plans to meet up for dinner. Daniel worries that everyone will discover the truth about his relationship with Aubrey, because "Jess knows what happened" between them (147).

As he and Desmond leave, Daniel thinks about how different he expected to feel "coming home" (147). He thinks about his mother's stories "of Jamaicans returning to danger" (148). Perhaps this is why she did not want him "to come back here" (148).
