Summary

Titus concludes that the Last Wolf used Latrell as “bait” (272) to abduct Black children. The police charge Denver Carlyle, a close friend of Cole’s, with drunk driving. The Last Wolf calls Titus and warns him that “your fucking flock ain’t safe” (275).

Marquis, worried about his brother, joins Titus and Albert for dinner. Afterwards, Titus admits that feels as if he is “disrespecting” (279) Helen if he does not think of her death. He then tells Marquis about Red DeCrain: during a raid on DeCrain’s compound, DeCrain’s family (including his two young sons) blew themselves up using suicide vests. The blast also killed several agents. Titus and DeCrain both survived. DeCrain pleaded to “surrender” (282), but Titus shot him instead. The FBI facilitated a cover-up of the event and allowed Titus to quietly retire. He tells Marquis that he ran for sheriff...
