Summary
Titus arrives at the Watering Hole, whose proprietor, Jasper, sells drugs but somehow evades police raids. Titus takes Marquis to the police station, where Marquis accuses Titus of “always trying to fix everything” (139) since their mother’s death. He admits that he got in a fight after hearing patrons making disparaging, racist comments about Titus. Marquis hints that one of Titus’ deputies works for Jasper. Titus confiscates Marquis’ belt—which has a knife in the buckle—and lets him go.
An anonymous caller informs Titus that he “did some work for a boy. Helped him put in this building. We took some girls out there…” (145). He mentions there were angels on the walls of the building. The caller hangs up before revealing the identity of his friend. Titus believes he recognizes the voice, although he cannot place it.
