All the Lovers in the Night is set in the city of Tokyo, Japan. After growing up in Nagano, Fuyuko graduates from high school and applies to and attends college in Tokyo. Throughout the novel, Fuyuko never travels back to her home city, always staying in Tokyo, even during the holidays.
Although Fuyuko resides in this heavily populated and cultured city, she rarely spends time outside of her apartment. She finds the crowds, the constant activity and noise overwhelming. When she does venture onto the streets, she is often overcome by anxiety and swiftly returns home. Being out in Tokyo reminds Fuyuko how alone she truly is. She is constantly watching the happy behaviors and interactions of the people surrounding and passing her, seeing their happiness as evidence of her own despair and isolation.
