Fuyuko

Fuyuko is the main character and first person narrator of the novel. In the narrative present, Fuyuko is 34 years old. She lives in Tokyo, Japan and works as a full time proofreading freelancer. Prior to taking this job, Fuyuko worked for a small publishing company, performing a similar role. She began this job immediately after graduating college. The longer she was with the company, the less she enjoyed working there. No matter how many times her coworkers invited her out to socialize, Fuyuko declined. Soon, her coworkers began ignoring her and gossiping about her, amplifying the workplace’s toxic environment.

Therefore, not long after starting the freelance job part time, Fuyuko decides to quit the publishing company and to start working from home full time. She is eager to hold a job that does not require her to leave the house or interact with others.
