Chapter 3 Summary
Over the next few weeks the Allstons and the Catlins become good friends. The Allstons take the Catlins on tours of the city and they often find themselves relaxing at each others' homes, like they were old friends. The intimacy develops quickly between them. One afternoon the Allstons stop by the Catlins' on their way to town to bring Marian flowers, and they have a nice conversation that continues the debate Joe and Marian had the first day they met. Joe learns that Marian and John have met Jim Peck, and he is a little put off by this, but Marian seems to like Peck. That evening, John invites the Allstons to have drinks with them and Joe is excited, until he discovers Peck is also an invited guest. The party proceeds quietly and Peck behaves himself, but Joe continues to find himself...
