When Marie-Laure is sixteen years old, she lives with her father at Number 4 rue Vauborel. She kneels over a table that contains a miniature replica of the entire area which he built for her, remembering every road, staircase, house and rampart. Her fingers trace around the model, acting as the eyes she no longer has.
Marie-Laure is a tall girl with freckles who lost her sight rapidly at the age of six. One of the last things she sees is the Natural Museum of History in Paris. When Marie-Laure and her father are forced to leave Paris because of the war, they head to her great uncle Etienne’s home in Saint-Malo. They hope to wait out the worst of the war and return.
