Summary
The bombs fall and buildings are blown to rubble in Saint-Malo while the city’s inhabitants cower and pray in crypts and cellars around the city. The Hotel of Bees lifts into the air, and comes down again in pieces. Werner comes to with a roar in his ears, his headphones gone and the left side of his face wet. The ceiling has fallen, and he is unable to stand. In the darkness he calls out, asking if they are dead. Werner can see light. Volkheimer reveals the extent of the damage with his flashlight. He sees Volkheimer uncover Bernd, but although Bernd is screaming, Werner is unable to hear him. Volkheimer carries Bernd to a chair and closes his mouth gently.
