Tuck

To Red, Tuck symbolizes herself and her struggles. When he goes missing, she insists on finding him because she does not want him to feel left behind like she does. She pursues him and treats her like she wishes other people would treat her.

Stars

Stars represent Celine. Celine can make the stars sing. When Red is happy, such as when she is with Celine learning to make food sacks for the chickens, allusions are made to stars. When Red is trying to prove impossible things, Celine tells her that while it seems impossible to see invisible things, a person can see stars at night that are invisible during the day. She then says that stars shine the most when it is darkest, symbolizing how Celine is most important in Red’s life when things are at their hardest.
