Red Byrd

Red is the protagonist of the story. She begins the story leaving one foster home and moving to another. She used to believe that impossible things were possible, but her experiences in foster care have taken away that belief. She arrives at the Groove’s expecting almost nothing and not willing to engage much.

She is a round character because the reader knows why she believes and acts as she does. She believed in impossible things because her grandmother taught her that they could happen. She is responsible because she had to take care of her gamma during the elderly woman’s cancer treatment once Wanda left. She is tough because she was frequently treated unfairly by foster families. The reader learns all of this through the memories of Red.
