Summary
The next chapter is titled “Jamison.” Jamie realizes Andrew's presence has distracted him “from the silence and the memories and the fear” (37). Jamie provides beans and Pop-Tarts for breakfast. He takes meat from the freezer for chili later. The meat will last only a few weeks, and Jamie hates the idea of hunting. As they talk, Andrew says he has heard that some European countries are sending aid that will arrive on the East Coast on June 10th. While Andrew is not sure it is real, he asks if Jamie has somewhere more important to be. He hints about the horrific situations, which is why he left the main road. Jamie provides more pain pills and antibiotics, then goes outside for more wood. Jamie is shocked to find cigarette butts on the ground near the woodshed.
