Chapter 9 Summary
Scarpetta meets Benton Wesley for lunch near Quantico. Scarpetta begins by accusing Wesley of not keeping her informed about the investigation. Wesley tells her the casing was planted to draw out the killer, that the FBI had intended to plant a story in the newspaper talking about possible evidence left behind and were watching the woods with hope the killer would appear. However, those plans would have to be delayed after Scarpetta's actions. Scarpetta then asks about the jack of hearts cards that had been found in the previous cases. Wesley tries not to answer her question at first, but finally admits that the card was found in the Harvey-Cheney case, but not in the vehicle.
